While there are many companies vying for smartphone supremacy, at the moment the two titans going to head for dominance of the consumer smartphone arena. With apologies to Blackberry, Windows Phone 7, and Palm OS, Google Android and Apple iOS are the two best mobile operating systems right now.

Now that Verizon is officially getting the iPhone, there have been a lot more questions on my blog about which phone is better, the iPhone or the high end Android phones.

That's a little more difficult question to answer as they both have distinct advantages so I thought I'd put together this article to address some of the advantages and disadvantages offered by each mobile operating system.

Choices - Advantage Android

If you're looking for a lot of different choices, then it's Android all the way. With the iPhone, you have two choices, this year's model and last year's model. Every year Apple releases one new phone. It seems like there is a new Android phone coming out every few days - there are over 100 Android powered phones and that number is continuing to grow. Android can be found in low cost phones that are free with two year contract and $250 with two year contract. You can get a variety of screen sizes and pick any carrier you want.

Apps - Advantage iPhone

If you want the biggest selection of apps, then the Apple App Store has the advantage by about 200,000 apps. The Android Market isn't a slouch by any means, as it does have over 100,000 apps, it just has less. Most developers develop for the Apple App Store first because people are more accustomed to paying for apps on the iPhone than they are on Android. The biggest difference is in games - quite simply, there are far better games available for the iPhone than on Android at the moment.

There is a workaround app on the iPhone called Skyfire than will work for some of these cases, but it's not nearly as nice as the phone being able to support it and it certainly doesn't "just work" as Apple has tried to make their devices do.

Ease Of Use - Advantage iPhone

You probably don't want to get a degree in engineering to use your phone. While Android is relatively easy to use, it's still not nearly as intuitive as the iPhone. The iPhone has a simple elegance to it. Android powered smartphones tend to appeal more to the tech savvy crowd. Again, this is a matter of preference. Just like with computers, some people like Windows and some people like Mac OS. Go to the store and play with both for a little bit and see which one appeals to you more but if you hate computers and barely know how to turn one on, stick with the iPhone as it is simpler.

Conclusion - Up To You

While I could make a case that either is better, ultimately it is going to depend on what you want. Me personally, I like my Android phone but I've played with plenty of iPhones and have found them fun and easy to use too. Get whichever one you like best.

Apple's Apple's everywhere but not an update in sight. The wait for an updated iPhone is one of the most anticipated technology trends in the world, and people quite literally plan their whole year around it. But I can see in to the future. An Upgraded Processor A5

The current iPhone 4 processor is called the A4 and is by all means a great chip (it is the same as featured in the iPad, Apple's take on a Tablet PC).

But if you take an A4 chip and put against Samsung's latest Hummingbird processor the A4 looks remarkably slow in comparison. The reason for this is the amount of cores it has, and so Apple must throw in a better chip-set to the iPhone 5 to compete with the latest generation of Smartphones from LG and Samsung respectively.

NFC Technology Integration

Apple have already been beaten to the punch on NFC Technology by the Google Nexus S, Google's pedigree Android smartphone. One thing Apple will definitely do is include iWallet technology into their iPhone 5 as to keep up with the latest payment solution trend.

One thing Apple always manage to do is re-market an existing technology and build on it. I suspect their take on NFC will be 'revolutionary'.

Apple's iOS is behind other operating systems in notifications - in fact, if you use an Android handset, iOS is around 3 years behind with no live widget screen updates. One thing Apple will definitely do with the iPhone 5 is release an updated version to iOS, including a better notification system for messages, social networking and email.

It is amazing to think that this actual list was written down by myself 3 weeks ago on a piece of paper. Just today the 2011 MWC kicked off, and the Samsung Galaxy II was unveiled with a dual core processor, 4 inch screen, 8 mega-pixel camera, NFC Technology and a display upgrade.

What this has told me is that smartphone feature trends are relatively the same, and to be honest, the iPhone 5 will probably incorporate ALL of the features on my list above if any other smartphone's features are to go by.

Is The Apple iPhone Easy To Use?

The greatest fear among the technophobic is the inability to use a new computer, a new piece of software or a new electronic device. Faced with this challenge, the Apple iPhone flattens the learning curve considerably. Apple's approach has always been to create products from a user's perspective, rather than from an engineer or a computer programmers perspective. That approach clearly pays off for the computer industry's powerhouse, with products like the Macintosh, the iMac, the PowerBook and the iPod under its belt.

The fact that its iPod digital music player is the dominant MP3 player in the market, with more than 90% of auctions at sites like eBay is testament to Apple's design prowess. One might say that the iPhone is the smart phone especially designed for people who hate to use cellphones.

The iPhone's user interface is intuitive, giving users the ability to use most of the iPhone's functions without reference to a user manual.

Apple which was among the pioneers of the graphical user interface in its Mac line of computers has done for the smart phone, what it has already done for the desktop, laptop and its iconic iPod digital music player. While you might sit back and feel that the iPhone's features are so user friendly that anyone could have done it, you might see some of the irony in that statement.

If the iPhone was so simple to use, why hadn't one of the other major telco's already instituted features like an intelligent keypad, computing intelligence smart enough to adjust the LCD display's brightness in response to environmental lighting, or the disabling of the keypad when it is brought close to your face already?

While it's competitors seem to be constantly struggling to add more features to its digital music players and computers, trying to outdo each other, this seems like an exercise in significantly upping the whizz-bang factor of its devices. Instead Apple goes the opposite route and looks for the simplest solution to any design or technical challenge. There is an elegance in simple solutions, and its the user friendly nature of the Apple iPod and soon the Apple iPhone which will likely bring this category of smart phones into the mass market.

Many complain that existing smart phones are perhaps a little too smart for their own good, with menus buried under more menus, and users struggling to make simple changes to their phones. The iPhone looks set to change that trend and if it succeeds in doing so, it would have blazed yet another trail on the technology landscape.

Nokia E7 Brings Great Features for Less Money

It seems that Nokia is extremely buoyed by the success of the E series of phones and it is getting ready to launch its new flagship model that will be in the E series of phones. Nokia is well known for launching its high end phones and flagship models only the N series tag, but the Nokia E7 is expected to be the first phone to be launched following a different strategy. The Nokia E7 is one phone that will be finally providing a suitable replacement to the Nokia communicator models that were selling in huge numbers a few years ago.

This is a phone that will be better than the Nokia N8 in terms of features. Taking a look at the various features that the Nokia N8 comes with will really astonish you because the Nokia N8 has been the best models from Nokia for well over three years now. The Nokia E7 will be having a 4 inch touch screen display that will be using the AMOLED display technology along with the ClearBlack solution for better brightness and contrast along with the user friendliness of being able to use the screen in direct sunlight. It was something that was missing in the Nokia N8 and not has finally taken care of this issue by providing it in the Nokia E7.

Even though the Nokia N8 came with extremely high end features, one of the major areas of disappointment in the phone for the lack of good features in the processing side of things. The Nokia E7 takes care of this issue by providing 256 MB of RAM and 680 MHz in terms of processor rating. Even though this may sound to be exactly similar to the Nokia N8, it has been slightly modified to make it both powerful and efficient. The phone will be coming with an eight megapixel camera that seems to be the only area where the Nokia N8 is better. While the Nokia N8 uses the 12 megapixel unit that comes with autofocus, the Nokia E7 comes with an eight megapixel camera without auto focus. Even though the Nokia N8 really has the upper hand in the camera segment, this really is not one of the best features of the Nokia E7 because it concentrates elsewhere.

The main area where this focuses its attention is the full QWERTY keyboard and by the use of this option, which has been able to make the best business phone ever. Not only will you be having an excellent touch screen display, but you will also be having an excellent full QWERTY keyboard as well. Analyst: Honeycomb is “for the Geeks”, Doomed Against the iPad 2

If you take the word of Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry’s word for it, Google’s Honeycomb update of their Android OS is one “by the geeks, for the geeks, and of the geeks.” For this reason, it won’t hold a chance against the iPad 2 when Apple’s new tablet hits shelves this Friday. His complaints seem to rest more on the only Honeycomb tablet currently available, saying the Motorola XOOM is plagued by freezes and crashes and suffers from inconsistent battery life that is far shorter than that of the iPad. His biggest issue with Honeycomb itself? The auto-wrap text doesn’t display properly in some cases on the tablets screen.

There is some good news in his advice for investors: Google won’t feel the hurt of Honeycomb’s shortcomings. While he thinks their web-based services like Gmail and Talk aren’t worth investing in an Android tablet, the companies that will really suffer are Motorola and NVIDIA, the manufacturer and processor provider of the XOOM.

CTIA Awards Site Teases Two Unnamed LG Phones [Sprint, T-Mobile?]

Just as with most major trade shows, CTIA will be holding an awards ceremony for the best phones/smartphones at the trade show. Three finalists have already been revealed: the HTC Thunderbolt the Motorola Atrix 4G and the LG Revolution

Two more have yet to be named, though, and they’re both from LG according to CTIA’s site. Internationally, LG has introduced the Optimus 2X and Optimus 3D, but if the trend of the CTIA only choosing phones on major American carriers holds strong, then we may have just gotten confirmation of new devices for both Sprint and T-Mobile.

T-Mobile is said to be carrying the Optimus 2X as the T-Mobile G2x. It’s a rumor that came out of nowhere but didn’t completely surprise us. The Optimus 2X for T-Mobile is said to follow the trend of all of their “G” devices – it could run stock Android.

Sprint may also have a phone from LG in the works. A rumored “EVO 3D” is expected to be announced at CTIA and just because it’s a part of Sprint’s best-selling brand doesn’t mean the device will be made by HTC. (The brand belongs to Sprint, after all.) Their phone could definitely be a reworked Optimus 3D that was unveiled at Mobile World Congress last month.

Then again, these could also be Windows Phone 7 devices. Or two completely new Android devices that the world has yet to hear of. If you happen to be one of the Sony Ericsson faithful and hoping to get some Windows Phone 7 goodness sometime in the future, then it looks like you may at some point, although just what the Sony Ericsson WP7 device will be called is a mystery.

A few more images of the rumoured Sony Ericsson prototype handset sporting Windows Phone 7 have hit the net and come our way courtesy of Slash Gear and by way of WMPoweruser who say the pictures of the SE WP7 device showed up on Esato and Chinese website lizecome.



Unfortunately though the pictures weren’t accompanied by any specs or details but what can be gleaned from the images is that the device will be a side-slide QWERTY keyboard, and that this handset is marked “prototype and not for sale.”



According to the guys over at WMPoweruser the smartphone is running an old version of the Windows Phone 7 user interface and may have been scrapped after SE couldn’t reach an agreement over Xbox Live, while other speculation says Sony Ericsson is still working on a WP7 handset.

So it could be that these are new images of the previously rumoured mothballed SE WP7 device rather than a new prototype, but it apparently still remains a mystery if or when Sony Ericsson will come up with a Windows Phone 7 smartphone.

A ray of hope has broken through the often cloudy UK sky, as the price of the Wi-Fi only Motorola XOOM has been revealed to be not all that bad. At the equivalent of about $730 US, the 449 euro XOOM is priced is priced right on par with the 16GB iPad model. Interestingly, the pre-order page at PC World that initially offered this pricing insight has reverted back to a simple landing page (unless we are missing something). Photographic proof rests above.

There have been some complaints about Android tablet pricing, but looking at the XOOM’s cost here in the States and abroad, I stick by my assessment that it is a fair price for the product you are getting. Sure, we’d love for it to be cheap, cheaper than the iPad, but that’s probably asking a bit too much. A recent report from WSJ found that the XOOM costs about $30 more to make than the iPad.

For now the pricing and specs of the XOOM keep it on par, but rumors of a new iPad launch coming any day now might have some tablet buyers hesitant.

IT'S been another interesting few weeks in the tech world. Two days after the allegedly- leaked memo from Nokia chief executive Stephen Elop described his company as "standing on a burning platform" for its failure to develop a smartphone to compete with Apple and Google, they announced an exciting partnership with Microsoft in which Windows 7 Phone will be adopted as the OS for future Nokia phones.

I say exciting, because despite falling behind in the smartphone market, Nokia are still the biggest handset manufacturer in the world and having just taken delivery of a lovely new Samsung Omnia Windows 7 Phone I can tell you that the Microsoft platform is a joy to use – intuitive, user-friendly and with great features like the “Live Tiles” which make everything just a single tap away.

I’d highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to upgrade their phone.
Which leads me on to Amazon’s Kindle. Like many people, I was a complete sceptic about e-readers until I had a play with my brother-in- law’s Kindle over Christmas.

Although there’s nothing like curling up with a good book on the sofa or in bed, I can totally see the benefit of digital versions of certain types of books, particularly tech and business-related titles where the ideas contained within are more important than the format in which they arrive.

I’ve since downloaded the excellent free Kindle app for my phone (also available for iPhone, iPad and Android phones) which has enabled me to download a whole load of classic novels for free in a matter of seconds.

I’ve also ordered my very first eBook, Poke The Box by business and marketing guru Seth Godin, which is part of an exciting new initiative called The Domino Project.
